MIRRORS

English Regency Convex Mirror

Clearly made to impress and inspire! What could be more English and a statement of the strength history and pride of the British Empire than a dragon flanked on either side by two male lions? This is a very large English convex Regency ( first quarter of the 19th century) gold leaf gilded softwood and gesso mirror. Beneath the impressive crest the base of the mirror rests upon a beautifully carved and sculpted scallop shell between elegant carved flowing leaves.
The inner frame further enhanced with typical form with 'close-ball' decoration to the concave frame; and a carved and gilded collar.  I have never seen a pediment of this complexity, scale and beauty.Crests are usually crowned with an eagle on a stony outcropping and less typically a hippocampi, yet this example was not content with a dragon but had to include the two lions to put it right over the top complete with scales; wings and a pointed tail. 48ins high; 30 ins wide

 Early French Regency Mirror

French Louis XV Rococo 18th Century Carved giltwood Wall Mirror. A mid-18th century French Louis XV giltwood wall mirror with original rectangular mirror pane, the mirrored showing bold intricate foliage and floral carving. The corners are accentuated with large C-scrolls which are connected by interlacing laurel garlands. The mirror is surmounted by a pierced cresting with a central flower and foliage basket of elaborate carving which is arched by a three-lobed rocaille cartouche. Supported on two small feet decorated with C-scrolls, the part of the frame is decorated by a central flower bouquet. Original gilding with beautiful patina. The original mirror panes with some corrosion. Literature: Graham Child: World Mirrors, London, 1990, p.194-195, fig. 359-364. A superb example of  period untouched mirror which not only retains it original plate and gold gilding but the back boards and surface history reveal a story seldom told these days in the antiques world. Pure, authentic, undisturbed and the real thing in every way. Not just shabby chic but actually a miraculous find which purists some times never get to see. Any surface wear and gold missing it likely due to light cleaning and dusting over the past 300 years.

English Queen Anne Walnut Parcel-Gilt Mirror

Queen Queen Anne Walnut Parcel-gilt Mirror, probably England, early 18th century, the scrolled cresting centering a carved concave gilt gesso shell device above the shaped molded liner. Original glass replaced with modern mirror. Walnut frame retains old surface, (imperfections), ht. 50, wd. 18 in.

 English George II Gilded Mirror

A wonderful George II carved giltded wood and gesso mirror circa 1730-1760. Retaining the original rectangular  plate, within a foliate, cushion-moulded surround, the shaped, scrolled cresting surmounted by " Prince of Wales" plumes above a stylized flower ( sunflower) blossom, between two rosettes. The frame carved with gessoed trailing foliage on a punched ground, the apron above a centred by a shell. Possibly regarded, but with excellent untouched Country House condition.

 Early French Regency Mirror

An exceptional untouched " survivor" . A small softwood French Regency mirror in pristine untouched condition, in fact the back looks as untouched as the front! Definitely related if not by the same maker as a pair sold October 2020 at Bonhams Oak Interior sale., Lot 529. Having a central rectangular plate with original glass and within a border with foliate corners and a small marginal mirror plate at each cardinal point, the outer frame carved with flowers and leaves.
